I LOVE fitness gadgets. Maybe it has something to do with being married to a “techie”, but when I work out, I am monitored by at least one of my favorite fitness gadgets. They keep me MOTIVATED, and give me the info I need to push myself harder during a workout. Take a look at some of my latest obsessions..
Polar F4 Women’s Heart Rate Monitor
The Pros: My heart rate monitor is hands down my favorite gadget. I wear it whenever I am doing a cardio or circuit workout. It provides you with very important pieces of information, the 2 biggies being your heart rate and calories burned. Your heart rate is super important, the higher it is the harder your body is working during your cardio workout. The calories burned feature of the monitor is awesome. Since the monitor takes into account your height, weight, age, gender, and heart rate, the calories burned are more reliable than estimates from a cardio machine.
The Negs: The chest band that comes with the heart rate monitor is NOT comfortable. I finally purchased an upgraded chest band made out of fabric- much better!
Garmin Forerunner 405
The Pros: I wear my forerunner when running outside. This watch is packed full of amazing features, but mostly I LOVE that you can see your time, distance, and speed based on GPS, which is super accurate. You can also use the watch while riding a bike.
The Negs: The battery needs to be recharged continuously, the forerunner can be used as a heart rate monitor BUT doesn’t show calories burned, pricey, bulky.
The Pros: Brian bought me a Fitbit for Christmas and I was so excited! It was the very first item on my list for Santa. I wear my Fitbit continuously, which is super easy due to its small size. The Fitbit is like a pedometer on steroids. It tracks how many steps you take in a day, calories per day (based on steps, and activities added through your online account), AND it can even track how well and how long you sleep at night. The Fitbit communicates with your computer, and all of the information it gathers is tracked online so you can see your activity, sleep, etc. over any given day or period of time. The online feature allows you to track what you eat, and to also add any workouts that don’t get tracked by the Fitbit, such as weight lifting (since your not stepping too often!).
The Negs: The online calorie tracker is not as comprehensive as other sites such as thedailyplate.com, or calorieking.com. In addition, when I wear my fitbit to bed to track my sleep patterns, I am so conscious of it that I do not sleep as well as I do without it- clearly a mental thing, I know!
Now imagine me wearing all of my favorite gadgets at one time, I look slightly ridiculous. What is YOUR favorite fitness gadget?
